Local Report Card to Add Gifted Indicator

This month’s Curriculum and Instruction post was submitted by Sandra Shields, Gifted Coordinator, and explains the recent adoption of an indicator for gifted performance accountability on the Local Report Card.

On December 13, 2011, the Ohio State Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt an indicator for gifted performance accountability on the Local Report Card.  The indicator will include measures that will be used in district rankings and measures that are important to observe.

The components to be included in the gifted indicator for district ranking are:

  1. Percentage of students who have been identified as gifted
  2. Percentage of students receiving gifted services
  3. The academic performance of identified gifted students in mathematics and reading on statewide tests (OAA and OGT)

Additional measures, to be reported but not used for district ranking, will include thoughtful and useful elements to assist districts in the support of their gifted students.  The complete gifted performance indicator will not be fully implemented until the 2014-2015 school year.  However, as early as the 2012-2013 school year, districts will be able to download the basic data information of the numbers and performance of identified gifted students on the state math and reading assessments.

Bucyrus City Schools strives to provide a continuum of gifted services spanning our PK-12 grades.  At the elementary, Ms. Carissa Wiedle and Ms. Traci Wetterau serve as Gifted Intervention Specialists.  Honors courses are available to students in grades 6-8 and high school students are encouraged to enroll in PSEO, Dual Enrollment, and AP classes.  Additionally, early entrance and grade level or content area acceleration are services provided to gifted identified students.
