Bucyrus City Spelling Bee

This month’s Curriculum and Instruction post was submitted by Sandra Shields, Gifted Coordinator/ESL Instructor, and highlights the 2011-2012 Bucyrus City Spelling Bee, which took place Jan. 9 at the Bucyrus Secondary School.

Bucyrus Elementary was all “a buzz” when it was announced on Tuesday morning (Jan. 10) that the three top spellers from the Bucyrus City Spelling Bee (held the previous evening) were all Bucyrus Elementary students.  Caleb Johnson, a fifth grade student, was declared the Champion when he correctly spelled the word “muscular” in the tenth round.  A spell-off was held to determine the second and third place winners.  Finishing second was fifth grade student, Logan Carman.  Olivia Harmon, 4th grade, finished third.

Mrs. Sandra Shields, coordinator of the City Bee, expressed gratitude to the community for their support of the Bee and the student competitors.  “The students should be proud of their accomplishment, no matter how many rounds they made it through the City Bee.  It is a special achievement to make it this far and it takes courage to get up on the stage in front of such a large crowd.  I’m proud of each student; the courage they showed and the sportsmanship that they exhibited.  It was a great evening.”
